Success as an entrepreneur can be measured by consistent growth. Showing up regularly and doing the things you know will create desired results requires massive action–not stopping. But in order to be consistent, you need to learn to access more of the mindset that makes you impervious to the obstacles of online business. Most entrepreneurs think that consistency is something you develop with willpower. Maybe you’ve tried some of these techniques? While they work in the short term, they’re a direct route to burnout and exhaustion.
Whether it’s your monthly income goal, the number of clients you aspire to attract or a program you’re working on in preparation for a launch–as an online entrepreneur, you have results that are in progress–the ones that you can imagine–but you haven’t yet achieved.
We are taught to think that outside obstacles are to blame for blocking our progress. And truly, this is a convenient option as it releases responsibility which feels better temporarily.
Having something or someone to blame feels good in the moment. But the downside of giving your power away to external conditions is that you will never eliminate all of those obstacles because they’re a natural part of life and business. So believing that your business would be a success “if only _____________ wasn’t a problem” is never going to be productive.
Your mindset matters because external factors aren’t what stops you. Your success is an INSIDE JOB and so is your self sabotage. What makes all the difference in your results is how you choose to harness the creativity and power of your own human brain. You CAN combine mindset with skillset in order to build a sustainable, successful business that feels incredibly rewarding. In order to do so, you’ll need to address what currently stops you.
I looked at my calendar today and realized that I had several tasks scheduled for completion. But outside my door was a beach…and my friends.
Feeling conflicted, I knew I’d be missing out if I locked myself inside to write emails and complete the work that I had scheduled for today.
Here’s the thing: When we embark on a journey to create an online business we know there will be times when we don’t feel like “doing the work”. And sometimes the reason we don’t want to do it is because of an opportunity (the excitement of a sunny beach date) and other times it’s because of avoidance (not wanting to feel something negative that comes up–boredom, overwhelm, confusion…).
Entrepreneurs who show up for themselves & their businesses learn to get in touch with their feelings and they clarify WHY they are creating those feelings for themselves.
What is on your calendar today and what do you feel when you imagine doing it? Why do you think you’ll feel that emotion?
Today… I felt reluctant. But I understood why. And I reminded myself of the reasons I was doing this work–to help YOU shatter your self-imposed glass ceiling. It created a feeling of purposeful in me that allowed me to show up despite the beach–and the friends. And later, I’m heading out for the sunshine! I’m not missing out on the beach. And I’m not creating a result that has me missing out on the entrepreneur I want to become. I’m willing to feel the discomfort of a few hours in order to create a greater net effect in the world — your life and mine.
I help my clients shatter self-imposed glass ceilings so they can make more money in their online businesses. But what is a glass ceiling? In this case, the belief that I’d be missing out from the beach experience created a feeling of reluctance. And that became my glass ceiling–one that I’d generated in my own brain. It could have kept me from taking action. But here I am. Writing to you. Creating an opportunity to connect and teach. A glass ceiling is something that isn’t obviously visible to you that holds you back. It’s hard to see because it’s part of the background noise you live with every day. It’s nearly invisible to you–just part of your daily life. But your results reflect the ceiling to you.
When that emotion shows up, you pull a 180 degree turn in an attempt to avoid it. It’s interesting–emotions are just energy moving through your body. But they are ultimately the force that motivates or demotivates you from taking action in your business (and your life…but there’s time for that another day).
Emotions can absolutely stop you from making progress. For example, when we think something we have done has been a failure, it’s easy to feel embarrassed. Embarrassment has a way of stopping entrepreneurs in their tracks. Being stopped and hiding out in avoidance results in you not following through on the things you’ve scheduled in order to succeed in business. And when you don’t follow through on a strategic plan, you can’t create the results you set out to produce.
When you don’t create the results you set out to, you’ll use that evidence against yourself going forward to reinforce your limitations and stay stuck right where you are.
The feeling of embarrassment is one that nobody actually wants to feel. But avoiding it has its pitfalls too. That’s why I help entrepreneurs distill out what stops them. When we demystify what blocks you from your goals, it’s possible to see where the disconnect is between the planning and implementation process. And when you can recognize that what you are avoiding is “only” a feeling (albeit, a miserable one), it’s easier to find a way through it. And here’s why: Emotions are generated by what you are “thinking”. Which is why mindset is the true determining factor of success.
So I’m curious, what are the top 3 feelings you feel as an entrepreneur and which feelings stop you from taking consistent actions in your business? (If self doubt is one of them, check out this training.)
A feeling is your glass ceiling. What’s yours?
