To make sales simple you’ve got to address what you currently believe about the process of selling. What are your thoughts about selling? If you can relate to any of these statements, you’re in for a change of heart today:
“I don’t want to be salesy.”
“What if they don’t want what I’m offering?”
“They don’t want to feel pressured.”
“I’m not an expert on sales.”
The art of sales can feel confusing to entrepreneurs who aren’t trained in sales. And I’m no exception. I wasn’t trained to “sell” as a teacher so when I started my first online business in network marketing a few years back I had to figure out a strategy that worked for me. As a life coach I created even more insight and I want to share it with you.
If there’s one topic we can all relate to as entrepreneurs it’s sales. We’re all excited about our product until it’s time to tell people exactly what we offer, how much it costs and where to get it. I can hear the mental brakes screeching to a halt when it’s time to “sell” for the first time. What if it doesn’t have to be that way?
If sales were simple, how would your business change?
There is only one secret I want to share with you today to clarify selling. By the time you read to the end of this blog and engage with this material, sales will be much less exhausting for you. Because here’s the biggest problem I see with our relationship to selling. We are taking responsibility for the WRONG thing.:
We believe that we can “get” customers to buy.
Believing that we create the opportunity for customers to buy.
Do you see the difference?
When you believe that you can “get” customers or create motivation for them to buy your product, you are taking responsibility for what they DO and how they FEEL. And I want to offer that you are never in control of what someone else does. Believing you can make someone else feel compelled or attracted to your offer attaches you to the outcome and will create the graspy energy of hustle and muscle that I talk about so often as a pathway to exhaustion in your business.
Did you go into business because you wanted to coerce people to buy your stuff? Heck no. In fact, I’d venture to guess that one of the reasons you went into business was so that you could pursue what lit you up more–to feel more freedom–and to create sustainable income. If you’re going to access more of that and less of the frustration, exhaustion and confusion that so often presents itself, it’s time to get clarity on selling and to make it simple.
When you believe that you can get someone to purchase your products and you feel graspy, or pressured, you’ll go one of two ways:
Neither are effective long term. #1 wears you out. #2 results in a permanent quit.
So now what?
Believe it or not, it’s all about taking responsibility for what you produce. You don’t produce action from another human. You DO produce:
2. – words to convey the offer (either copy OR verbally–YOUR ACTIONS).
3. – valuable experiences, opportunities and assets. (the products)
When you step into responsibility for creating these 3 things, you can gain the experience of presence, connection and generosity toward your potential clients and this propels you to make the offer from a place of non attachment to their decisions.
When you detach from their decisions you release your graspy, exhausting energy and get more centered, grounded and certain in what you are doing. This is what allows you to create the best opportunities for your potential clients. And that is what you are ultimately responsible for.
Have you been complicating sales?
Take a step back and be willing to consider that there are only 3 things you need to produce. And you don’t produce the action from your potential clients of “buying”. That’s up to them. You present “opportunity”. They get to decide what they think about it and how they feel. The way they think and feel will compel them to either say “yes” or “no” to what you are selling. And you get to make their decision mean anything you want about you, your business or your product. More on that next week.
