Dealing with fear is an everyday process for entrepreneurs. And as a human, you’ve experienced two types of fear. When was the last time you felt yourself lock up? Clinging to safety, you found a reason to stop in your tracks and retrace your footsteps to a place of avoidance. And when was the last time you did this in your entrepreneurial journey?
Jelly in the belly
Straight up “no.”.
That’s how I showed up right before this photo was taken. But the type of fear I was experiencing was the kind that is hard wired into human brains to protect us from real danger–a risk–a treacherous condition.
I want you to know without a doubt that there is nothing wrong with you when this happens. Fear is part of the human experience. And it’s an emotion that is hard wired into us for good reason–survival.
There’s a time and place for this fear to activate. It can save your life.
Last week I visited Moab, Utah for the first time in my life. My brother is a risk taker and he planned a family vacation for all of us–our parents, his family and mine. We had an amazing time AND it was full of what I like to call “treachery”. We hiked, biked, river rafted and drove UTV’s on the most beautiful trails–with the biggest drop offs I’ve ever been within 6 inches of. And guess what?
My fear was triggered.
At Arches National Park I tried to make the walk over to Delicate Arch with my husband and son and locked up in panic a few hundred yards from the natural structure.
Was this failure?
In the moment, I felt disappointed in myself. I had made the 1.5 mile walk up the rocks to view the arch but didn’t manage to walk over to it to stand for a photo op with my family. My body didn’t feel like it was in my control anymore and I was afraid I might fall into the abyss beside the rock structure. So I sat. And I took photos. And I breathed.
Maybe you’re in your business right now feeling something similar. You’re frozen, unsure and feeling slightly out of control.
The thing is, your brain is wired to tell you that there is something to be terrified of. It’s natural to feel fear.
But the fear is unwarranted. There is no cliff–no dropoff–no real danger. It’s all made up in your head because of primal survival programming that human brains run on default. You are only frozen in your business because of thought errors that your brain is running automatically.
The way out of type 2 fear is causal coaching. When you create awareness of WHY you are doing the things you’re doing (and not doing the things you know you need to do), you can take your control back. I want to help you do this. And I know exactly how to address what’s stopping you right now.
The cliff and my fear of heights was a real safety concern. It was based in type 1 fear. But taking the next step in business is no cause for locking up and freezing. Your brain thinks it is. But we can work together to overcome Type 2 fear and anything that is currently stopping you from realizing the goals you want to attain.
So…What scares you in your business? And which of the 2 types of fear is it based in?
My stop at Delicate Arch wasn’t a failure. It was a gorgeous moment for my son to realize his own power and courage. It was a bonding moment for my husband and my son to share. I got to witness it. It was perfect. And I found acceptance and compassion for my human self all right there on the mountain. I had support and a hand to hold on my way back to safety.
You don’t need to bulldoze your way through fears in business or any fear caused by thought errors. You can find compassion and safety for yourself there too. It’s ALL within you. You just need to know how to find it and how to access it on purpose.
